A space to reveal and hide. The fourth zone, inspired by the 4th and 10th Zodiac archetypes Cancer and Capricorn. The theme of security became a space for viewpoints and opening welcome arms. This main entrance opens up the Space facility to the world, with grand staircase leading into the heart of the hill. It features a south facing viewing platform for broad vista views of the surrounding woodland and city below, it includes a sundial pointing due north and casts shadows upon the clock engraved in the ground. Shell inspired origami architecture forms higher secret hiding spots that help users to feel safe but with access to the views around them. The structure allows light to flow into the foyer entrance and move with the change of the day. Underground there are a series of sleeping rooms that allow for rest and recovery, a safe space for those who need it.

Secure means different things to different people

POLARITY 4
Privacy / Publicity
Home / Work
Refuge / Prospect
Cancer / Capricorn

This polarity where Cancer the 4th house represents private life, domesticity, the need for home and nurture opposes  Capricorn, the 10th, representing public life, career, reputation and accountability. Attachments and love versus achievements and rewards. The theme here addresses the line between public  and private and therefore an element of security experienced on either side of this scale. Where one feels most comfortable in life, either introverted or extroverted. I decided on the word security. Feeling safe and secure in your position in life lends itself to better health, knowing you are capable of achieving goals but have somewhere to go to call home when the day is done. A  protective shell and an inner world is important to rest and recover when you need to appear put together on the outside world. I wanted to use the biophilic design strategy of prospect and refuge in this space, this is the practice of maintaining visible access to the world, such as a view, while restricting harm’s way. This provides the feeling of opportunity while it the same time helping people stay safe, a good example for this would be a tree house or balcony.
This safety space will be a view point and welcoming entrance to my design, with a vista balcony offering south facing views of the Tay river and city, while honouring the greek design of sleeping rooms within their temples.
