DDOESDESIGN
Our team’s HABLab installation, Refract, is a dynamic colour psychology themed experience fitting the category of PLAY as a human habitat. Play is engaging in activity for enjoyment, and is a method of learning and discovering personal qualities, creativeness and confidence in a more enjoyable comfortable unplanned field than work or home. Play is encouraged in children, but less acceptable for adults, we wanted to fit this category to allow adults to explore and have a space for play.
Refract is an inclosed light tight cuboid, that from the outside - decorated with ‘Dazzle Camouflage’ effect – is not obvious in purpose, this is to draw people in, to open the doors and experience the real dynamic projection display on the inside.
Fit with a crisp white interior, draping fabric, seat, lamp and mirrored feature wall; the space is elegant and clean. Projectors display animated coloured transitions that light up the whole box, as light is bounced from angled mirrors and white walls, catching the translucent fabric and giving off an iridescent glow. This fills the space with an energetic experience which the user can control with the provided app and can respond their feelings to the atmosphere created.

CRITICAL STATEMENT
Overall I am very pleased with the final outcome of our HABLab installation, I feel that we created a very sophisticated and clean space that is infinite in dynamic experiences due to the use of 3 projectors and lamp collaborating to make dramatic colour displays which the user can choose to control. Targeting the category of Play gave the team room for more creative concepts and I feel that after initially feeling bewildered with options, we chose a path that suited everyone’s passions, giving each team member room to express themselves in their own disciplinary contribution. Making progress with our box over the weeks was very hands on and I feel that we all learned a lot from trial and error, and learning to work around any problems we did not foresee. Personally if I were to make any changes to the installation, although I was pleased with our seating arrangement; they would be to have the floor a soft and padded duvet-like material, accompanied by bean bags and pillows so that the user could lie down and look up into the energetic animations, as I feel this would be a more relaxing and playful experience.
