THE BRIEF

As the world goes by every day, time is a most precious part of how we live. As diurnal creatures we rely on the sun rising up and falling down to define our daily patterns, and so time was created by an understanding of this changing environment we live in. As human consciousness grew over thousands of years, we tracked stars moving across the heavens and shadows drifting behind rocks to adapt ourselves to the modern-day hours on the clock. It is thanks to this time we can understand Monday to Friday 8hr shifts and find ourselves running for the bus even though it is usually running late. But even as the Swiss made millions fashioning it into watches, time became something that we almost always claim we ‘don’t have enough of’ due to constant deadlines and busy schedules.

With moments passing us constantly we often define some as precious and some as mundane. The Ancient Greeks believed that time was to be celebrated and that we should make the most of everyday by doing things we love and make us feel good. It is up to us to make more of those passing moments precious. It is the time we spend connecting with others and ourselves that are most often defined as memorable, as we all share the same desires for happiness and joy.

But increasingly on a global to local scale time is to be endured, days feel hard for those who feel hopeless or lost. It is a sadly increasing statistic that members of our community feel lonely, isolated or that they live without purpose, and 1 in 4 live with a mental illness according to the World Health Organisation. With the direction of the global economy and the norms of changing life path more frequently than a few decades ago, people often feel at ‘crossroads’, a mid life crisis, or a simple lack of understanding of themselves and what makes them happy.

Due to this there is an increased popularity in spiritual practises that encourage more time for deeper thought and understanding in who you are and what your ‘path’ may be, and so aiding individuals to find meaning in a complicated world. Astrology is one practice currently enjoying broader cultural acceptance and has proven to enlighten at least an interest in bettering oneself or understanding the interactions we have with others.

From these findings I have set myself the brief to design a place for all who need an element of guidance, refocus or increased sense of self. To help people feel ‘seen’ and understood for their talents and personalities and let them connect with others who feel and love the same things. With the help of themes stemmed from astrology that look into different aspects of life and all its patterns.
Just as the Greeks ventured to temples for healing in times of sickness or crisis, I aim to give people that ‘time’ they feel they are missing and encourage a celebration of activities for personal development through my final design.
